SURPRISE PARTY

I was standing on the top of a hill. Although still dizzy from the transfer, I could see from the strange plants and animals that I was actually two megayears in the past. When I radioed to Alpha base, I was warned off the air, although I didn’t know by whom.

I heard shots, not too far off, and that got my blood working, so I crept into the forest, moving east. I could hear a waterfall, so I went in a little farther. There I found Bobby Brandon, frightened and wounded. I had no supplies, so I couldn’t treat him there. He said that he as fired upon the moment that he arrived, and that the area was terribly dangerous, so we decided to get moving. A few moments later, the radio crackled to life, and Colonel Powell came on the line. He said, no, ordered us to move north-east, and to do so with great care, as we were deep in enemy territory. We were again warned off of the radio and got no more information about the overall situation, other than to be on the lookout for other American soldiers.

When Brandon and I came again to the place where I had arrived, we checked the compass and decided to head north across the rather improbable road that we found at the bottom of the hill. As we were just about to cross, we heard the grumble of a heavy engine, and hit the deck - better safe than sorry. A big truck with a gun mount drove past, and since I’d never seen its like before, I wasn’t about to stand up and announce myself. After the car had past, and quiet has fallen again, we sprinted across the road.

While we were crossing the field of tall grass that was on the far side, we were radioed by an another voice, which didn’t identify itself, that the our goal to the north-east was a trap, and that we should head north from our initial position. The accent didn’t sound quite right, so we decided that someone was trying to dupe us. The point to the north-east would remain our goal. Soon after, we ran into another American, one Cyrus Parker. His story was much the same as ours, so we joined forces and headed off.

When we reached our grid ref. in the north-east, we stumbled upon two hostiles. One called for backup, and the other opened up, so the three of us mowed them down as quickly as we could. I got winged, but three on two is poor odds when you’re slinging rifles around, so it was over in a moment.
