At the rendezvous with Andy Cornell’s troops, we got further orders from Powell, telling us to continue east, and to take command of a small base there. Cornell took the prisoner, Berezov, with him and headed off to the North. There were a few hostiles in our path, but we beat them handily. I can’t say that I was pleased at being given the command of a tiny base so close to the front, and to a large mass of Russian troops. In fact, I was just about shaking. I couldn’t let the troops see that, though, otherwise they would panic, and all would be lost here. So I put on a good front, and set about keeping them busy building up the base so that we would have a chance to survive. We built a lab and a workshop to try and build some of the experimental solar vehicles that we’d been give the schematics for. We got some built, but it quickly became clear that the light solars were no match for the heavier Russian tanks. The commander that I was to replace introduced me to our best scout, one Cpl. Frank Forsythe (II.). Because Frank was a jovial fellow, joking about stealing all of the Russian’s toilet paper, and such, I would have been tempted to think that he was a poor scout, save for the fact that I saw, or didn’t see, him show up at the base. One moment he wasn’t there, and the next he was. He gave us all quite a shock when he simply appeared at the base and began chatting with Lawson, who’d known him before the mission began. Since he obviously knew what he was doing, I was very willing to take his advice on what to do next. After Forsythe went off to do some more recon, we were seen by a Russian patrol(I.). Luckily, we were able to kill them before they could call for help and get real fire drawn down on our base. All the same, they would be missed, and it wouldn’t be long. When Forsythe returned with information about the Russian line, we picked a spot to break through, mounted up the vehicles, and made the push north to Alpha base. Although some of the vehicles didn’t manage to make it, all of us managed to escape with our lives. ![]() |
