NATURAL BORN HEROES

Soon we were back at Gamma, where, although they had sustained some damage, the interim commander had acquitted himself well, and the base was still standing. I reviewed the progress that he had made in base entrenchment and weapons technology, and then immediately got all of the people in the base to work building up the defenses still further, and finishing off some weapons research that had been previously neglected. Once we got the cannons online, and built some cannon turrets, we were able to fight off the next Russian attack with few problems and no losses.

Using that reprieve we were able to get vehicle production up to snuff and take the Russians head on. At that point, however, we were running out of materials, so I had some workers thin our lines of defense a little, scrapping turrets for their materials and such, since the more powerful vehicles could more than make up for the lack of turrets. This state of affairs continued for a while, and we fought of several Russian attacks. We noticed that the Russians had also started to use remote controlled vehicles, which was a bother, since we could no longer steal and refit damaged vehicles.

Eventually we got a radio message from Powell, saying that the General had been seriously injured, so he was taking command for the moment. My heart fell, and I didn’t really want to think about what would happen if the General died. At least he promised us some reinforcements, since the Russians were really keeping the pressure up.

Once we had a good stock of vehicles ready, I decided to try a probing attack. The Russians had rebuilt their base, and it was bigger than ever. We were able to do some light damage, but their defenses were nothing to scoff at. So I had my vehicles hit and run until they could get into a position to do some major damage. Eventually they had to retreat when the Russians decided that enough was enough, and seriously reinforced the area.

When the reinforcements, commanded by Major Sikorsky, arrived, we decided to make the final push. I had a few minutes to repair and refuel, and then we headed off, my unit in the lead. Although the battle was touch and go at times, we eventually managed to crack the shell of the base and finish it once and for all. That is, unless the Russians decide to rebuild it a third time...
